Neither team looked very exciting and even with the crowd starting to show interest both the Sonics and Knicks looked like they would rather be somewhere else. Danny Fortson’s rough style of play looked a bit labored and after several pushes and a few flops he found a way to foul out yet again, racking up six fouls in just 18 minutes of play. He even managed to get a seventh foul coming in the form of a technical coming after his sixth hack coming in the form of a Malik Rose wrestling match followed by a Danny Fortson pout session. Not a good outing for a player looking to win back the trust of his teammates and the favor of his coach.
The game wasn’t all bad as some Sonic players were able to step up and make sure this losing streak did not make it to 4-games. Rashard Lewis scored 23 points on 10-19 shooting while also stealing a bucket from Stephan Marbury knocking his fast-break lay-in off of the backboard. Nick Collison was also instrumental, battling down low for 6 rebounds and scoring 8 points on 3 of 4 shooting. All-in-all a very efficient game for the Sonics second year big man. Antonio Daniels was also solid off of the bench, scoring 11 points and dishing out 7 assists.
The Knicks got 20 points out of both Stephon Marbury and Tim Thomas; however neither was able to step up in the final minutes of the fourth quarter and deliver the Knicks a win. With momentum on their side and the crowd stirred up a little, Tim Thomas missed an easy dunk off of a great Marbury pass. Later he would shoot a 3-point shot that was very lucky to get rim. At this point, it seemed that Marbury had lost interest in the game.
Where will the Sonics’ go from here? They are 42-19 and just beat a surging New York Knicks team in the Garden. They went through the motions and with New York leading most of the way, the Sonics used the final minutes of the fourth to finally show us that Seattle-style basketball again, a scrappy-fast-rough style of play that we have all taken for granted this season. On Tuesday they will travel to Chicago in an attempt to get even after letting the Bulls steal one in Key Arena only a few days earlier. Will the Sonics be able to play off the momentum of their last two minutes in New York? |
